Turkish baths and saunas under control

Muğla Governor Ahmet Altıparmak announced a department oversight on Turkish baths and saunas in tourist areas and said a commission will be established to organize an inspection process.

After stories in the media of unsanitary Turkish baths and saunas in Muğla, Governor Altıparmak said in a statement that, “Turkish baths and saunas operating in Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye will be inspected properly by commissions including official representatives of the authorities.” “It is critical that Turkish baths and saunas in Muğla’s popular tourist areas such as Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye operate under sanitary guidelines with business and work licenses approved by the authorities. To achieve this, the inspections must be implemented regularly and properly.” A notification that was sent to district governors by the Muğla Governer’s office read, “Turkish baths and saunas operating in nearby areas of the municipality will be subject to strict inspections by a commission that will be headed by the district governors and will include members of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Ministry of Health, Municipalities and local government.”

Pointing out a story released by the media alleging private baths and saunas operate without business licenses and without adequate sanitary conditions, Altıparmak said: “To improve this situation, inspections must be carried out and sanitary requirements in such places must be fulfilled immediately. We will cancel the business licenses of baths and saunas that don’t obey the rules. Our aim is to improve the quality and set higher standards in every sector. We will avoid the negative publicity and conditions for tourism.”
