Marmaris Port eyes expansion

As port officials in Marmaris await approval from the Culture and Tourism Ministry to start construction on an additional 300-meter-long pier to be able to serve four cruise ships at the same time, local environmentalists oppose the plans, arguing that the increased number of visiting ships will put the future of popular tourism town at risk.

The plans to bulid an additional pier to Marmaris Port is still the number one item on the town’s agenda.

The general manager of the Marmaris Port has argued that the port needs expansion to profit more from cruise tourism. However, environmentalists counter that increased cruise traffic would harm Marmaris’s ecosystem.

Şükrü Tugay, general manager of Marmaris Prot Management Inc., told the Anatolia news agency that the port needs to expand to accommodate four ships at once.

Marmaris needs immediate action

Stating Marmaris’s nature, agriculture, animal husbandry, wildlife population and sustainable tourism is in danger, environmentalists ask for immediate action against the mojor problems of the Aegean town.

There are nine major threats to the unmatched natural beauty and wildlife population of Muğla’s Marmaris district, environmentalists say, calling on authorities to take action.

In Marmaris, which attracts more than 1 million tourists annually, the Environment Volunteers, a 200-member organization, recently published a written notice, “That’s enough. Do not let Marmaris fade away,” addressing Muğla citizens and Muğla’s six parliamentary members. Stating Marmaris’s nature, agriculture, animal husbandry, wildlife population and sustainable tourism is in danger, environmentalists ask authorities to collaborate on solving current problems, as quickly as possible.

Real estate prices down but not out in Marmaris

Although there has been a significant decline in purchasing in the real estate market over the last two years, Marmaris estate offices do not think prices have dropped to the depths predicted.

Due to the global economic crisis, potential buyers were expecting huge reductions in property prices, as seen in Europe and the rest of the world. Although Turkey is feeling a knock on effect, most local agents say they have not been as badly hit as others.
