A fire sparked at 11 a.m. yesterday in the forestland of the naval command located in southwestern Muğla province’s Marmaris district has not yet been taken under control, the Forestry Directorate’s Muğla branch Regional Deputy Director Mümtaz Kanat has said.
In a statement to the Anatolia news agency, Kanat noted that the fire is affecting 10 hectares of land and that a firefighting team of 200 people has been working to contain the fire with seven helicopters and land vehicles. The deputy director also said fire departments from other Muğla districts have dispatched teams to help.
“Fighting the fire at this point is very difficult because the land is steep and transportation means to the region very limited. Although the wind has slowed down, giving us a window of opportunity to advance in containing the fire, it is too early to say the fire is completely under control,” Kanat said early yesterday afternoon.

If you run your finger down the west coast of Turkey you will come eventually to Marmaris, and, beyond it, to a two-pronged spit of land that juts out into the Aegean Sea and resembles an open mouth all ready to swallow up the tiny Greek island of Simi (Sömbeki)
The upper jaw of the spit is the Reşadiye Peninsula, named after the tiny town of Reşadiye at the far western end. The lower jaw is the Hisarönü Peninsula, named after the blink-and-you’ll-miss-it resort of Hisarönü, but sometimes known as the Loryma Peninsula after the scant remains of the ancient city of Loryma right down at the southern tip. This is one of the more beautiful and unspoilt parts of the Turkish coast, protected (so far) from over-development by its sheer remoteness.

Approximately 117 cameras have been installed on 15-meter-high poles in the center of the city of Marmaris and in the İçmeler, Armutalan, Belbdibi provinces, in hopes of improving security and enhancing tourism. Information about the new project, which will include 27 omni-directional cameras, was provided at the assembly of the Marmaris Committee of Camera Systems, led by Marmaris official Cemallettin Özdemir.
Noting that the first phase of the project was complete and that the second phase would consist of building a surveillance center at the Marmaris Provincial Police Department, Özdemir added: “The most important feature of this $1.5 million project is that it’s done with optical fiber cables for the first time in Turkey. This system will allow for 1,000 additional cameras to be built without expense. They are also resistant to earthquakes and any other natural disaster.”
