The management of a hotel in the resort town of Marmaris has been left with only female employees after firing the male members of its staff for having romantic relations with female customers, according to the Radikal daily.

Pelin Yücel, manager of the Image Hotel, said they had decided they would no longer employ male staff and that the four female employees they currently had were successfully taking care of every job at the hotel, from night watch duty to repairs and from catering to cleaning. A majority of the 27-room, 60-bed hotel’s customers are Russian and British tourists.

Yücel, who has been the hotel’s manager for the past eight years said explained, “Even though it’s against the rules, we have been unable to stop our male personnel from having relationships with our customers for years. In the past five years, I have caught numerous male employees spending time with female tourists instead of doing their jobs at different hours of the day, including midnight and the early morning hours. The last straw was when I saw our bartender, who was a very decent man, walk out of the bathroom with a British tourist during work hours. I decided to hire women only in the hotel after that.”

More than 2 million foreign tourists traveled to Muğla by air and sea in the first eight months of 2008. Compared to last year, there has been a 13 percent increase. English citizens visited the region the most. Half of the tourists coming to the region were English, meaning more than 930,000 tourists.

Important tourism centers such as Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye are located in Muğla. In 2007, 1.9 million tourists visited the region, compared to 2.2 million in the first eight months of 2008 alone. Most visitors traveled by plane, with 1.1 million landing in Dalaman Airport and 761,000 landing in Milas-Bodrum Airport. More than 340,000 tourists arrived by sea.

Muğla Governor Ahmet Altıparmak announced a department oversight on Turkish baths and saunas in tourist areas and said a commission will be established to organize an inspection process.

After stories in the media of unsanitary Turkish baths and saunas in Muğla, Governor Altıparmak said in a statement that, “Turkish baths and saunas operating in Bodrum, Marmaris and Fethiye will be inspected properly by commissions including official representatives of the authorities.” “It is critical that Turkish baths and saunas in Muğla’s popular tourist areas such as Marmaris, Bodrum and Fethiye operate under sanitary guidelines with business and work licenses approved by the authorities. To achieve this, the inspections must be implemented regularly and properly.” A notification that was sent to district governors by the Muğla Governer’s office read, “Turkish baths and saunas operating in nearby areas of the municipality will be subject to strict inspections by a commission that will be headed by the district governors and will include members of the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Ministry of Health, Municipalities and local government.”
