Online travel agency Holidays-Direct release details of their latest trend in summer holiday sales over the previous six months, with Turkey being confirmed as the most popular summer holiday destination for 2009.

Holidays to Turkey are overtaking holidays to Spain in the latest statistics for the ‘number one’ destination for UK travellers.

Customer service representatives have received many requests for Turkey holidays to resorts such as; Antalya, Bodrum and Marmaris. With Turkey surrounded by Aegean and Black Seas and enjoying vast amounts of coastline appealing to families, couples and beach lovers alike, many UK holidaymakers are heading to more exotic non-euro resorts where there is greater value for money.

Jon Pearce, Web Marketing Manager of www.holidays-direct.co.uk says: “We have seen a sharp increase in bookings of holidays to Turkey over the last couple of months. Holidaymakers want to make the most of their summer getaways, especially in today’s climate and are choosing destinations which are slightly different to Euro-zone resorts. Holidays which have a more mysterious appeal are proving popular with those who normally travel to Spain, Greece or Italy for example.”

The top 10 summer holiday destinations are:-

1. Turkey
2. Spain
3. Cyprus
4. Tunisia
5. Greece
6. Bulgaria
7. Canaries
8. Portugal
9. Italy
10. Croatia

Jon continues: “Holidaymakers want more for their money and travelling to countries where they have their own currency will not break the bank. With the strength of the pound being far greater than the Euro, better exchange rates are far more attractive.”

Turkey has much to offer its visitors as east meets west in with a mix of modern and traditional architecture, retail establishments and resorts. While western influences create modern amenities, giving a more homely vibe, the eastern diversity gives more depth to the tourist regions and visitor excursions.

Day tripping to Turkey’s capital Istanbul is perfect for couples and explorers, checking out ancient ruins, suburban cafes and bars. Turkey’s many beaches are the main attraction for many families, couples and singles. Culture-rich, family-friendly Turkey is rapidly becoming Britain’s number one summer holiday destination of 2009.

The Marmaris Trade Chamber, or MTO, held a press conference to explain its efforts to make the district a brand in tourism. Mayors in Marmaris, and Turkey Travel Agencies and Tour Operators, or TURSAB, representatives, South Aegean Union of Hotel Owners, or GETOB, and 23 non-governemental organizations attended the meeting.

Using other countries’ promotional campaigns as examples, the meeting’s participants decided to establish a Marmaris Introduction Committee to make an effective campaign to introduce the district to the tourism market.

“It is necessary to become a brand to increase tourism income. For the Marmaris Introduction Committee to be established, it has to allocate a budget for the promotion of the district. International companies have been allocating 50 million euros to brand their areas. As a result of our promotional efforts, Marmaris should be a brand that is easily associated in people’s minds as a tourism destination. Of course all local administrations and non-governmental organizations should work together,” said Şentürk Irklı, a brand editor, while explaining branding at the meeting.

The number of foreign tourists coming to the province of Muğla in the first half of the year, by air and by sea, increased significantly from the same period last year. Muğla Governor Ahmet Altıparmak said the number of foreign tourists coming to Muğla, particularly to important tourism centers like Bodrum, Marmaris, Fethiye and Datça, has reached 947,040. He noted that this number was 816,961 during the same period last year, meaning there was a 16 percent increase. In the first six months of this year, 471,370 tourists landed at the Dalaman Airport and another 330,617 tourists came through the Milas-Bodrum Airport. A total 801,987 tourists came by air, while 145,053 tourists preferred the customs stations at sea ports. Altıparmak said English people showed a particular preference for Muğla. Among foreign tourists visiting the region, Brits came first with 426,893 tourists, followed by tourists from the Netherlands with 80,461, Germany with 69,678 and Russia with 53,445. Altıparmak said the increasing number of tourists delights residents of the province. The increase has had a positive effect not only to the tourism sector but also on other sectors as well, he said. The mayor pointed out that there are wonderful, untouched bays in Muğla’s coastal regions and invited domestic tourists to visit the province and spend their holidays here. MUĞLA – DNA

Marmaris is one of Turkey’s most popular destinations for both foreign holiday makers and natives of Turkey with the summer months attracting a high number of sun-seekers. The hot summer temperatures, and the excellent location on a pine-fringed, sheltered bay, make it the perfect sun trap. The weather in Marmaris is mild and stable for most of the year; summer months can see the temperatures hitting a high of 35C while the mild winter days will still be warm at around 15C.

From April onwards, the temperature in Marmaris climbs past 20C, and by July it will hit the over 30C mark. In July and August the sun will be in the clear, blue sky for around 13 hours per day and the temperature will not usually dip below 30C.
The warm Mediterranean Sea is perfect for diving, snorkelling and swimming. The temperature does begin to cool down around October, but you will still find the sea warm enough to swim in, and you will still benefit from around seven hours of 23C sunshine per day.

The mild weather in Marmaris during the winter months makes it the perfect time for exploring the neighbouring towns in comfort. Holidays in Marmaris are an ideal base for seeing the sights and attractions of nearby towns such as Icmeler, Dalaman and Gocek, and the most photographed beach in the Mediterranean can be found only a short trip away at Olu Deniz.

The winter temperatures from November to February will stay at around 15C for around five hours a day, giving more than enough sun to pick up a golden tan.

After a four hour flight from the UK can see you basking in Turkey’s glorious sunshine anytime of the year.

The Marmaris Yacht Charter Show originally began as a small get together in 1980 when three people with sailing yachts invited a small number of Yacht Charter agents to join them for a short cruise along the Turkish coast. Word got out very quickly around the world that the Turkish coast was a very unique and beautiful cruising ground for yachts.

May of 1981 saw the beginning of the Marmaris Yacht charter show and festival which has become an annual event in which charter agents and brokers from around the world are given an opportunity to see the “Turkish Fleet” of charter yachts, meet their crew and familiarize themselves with the area.

Over the years, this event has grown to include many more activities, including a fun race around Marmaris Bay, a Spring Regatta and a trade show with numerous local and national exhibitors. The Marmaris Yacht Charter Show includes sleek classic sailing yachts and traditionally designed Turkish vessels; high-tech cruisers and mega-yachts. Today this festival has become an internationally recognized yachting event, attracting yacht charter agents and yachts from around the world.
