All U.S. and most European citizens, even infants, need a valid passport to enter Turkey for stays of up to 90 days. U.S. citizens also need to purchase a visa, which can be done at the official point of entry for $20 USD (as of 01 April 2004), UK citizens purchase visa for 10 GBP, most European nationals purchase visa for 10 Euro.

Canadian citizens need only a valid passport to enter Turkey for stays of up to 90 days. Children under 16 may be included on a parent’s passport but must have their own to travel alone.

Driver Safety Briefing

The cardinal rules of safety while driving in Turkey are: drive very defensively, avoid driving at night, and keep your emotions in check.

The Regional Security Office has analyzed American employee accidents that have occurred during the past several years in order to identify “lessons learned” that can be utilized to increase driver safety, prevent injuries and perhaps even save lives. The conclusion is that many of the accidents — not all, but many–were avoidable.

A number of accidents occurred when a local driver stopped, turned, or took unexpected action that resulted in the U.S. driver hitting another vehicle or being struck by a third vehicle. Many of the “unexpected” actions were unexpected according to U.S. driving practices but are quite common in Ankara, Istanbul and other parts of the country. About half of the accidents were clearly, according to local standards, the fault of the non-U.S. drivers. The key to reducing accidents is situational awareness, concentration and extremely defensive driving.

Thursday Market in Marmaris (the popular Friday Market)
Marmaris Village Market sells fruit, vegetables, fabrics and some clothes - for men, women and children, from street-cred clubwear to fake designer goods and last year’s must-haves. Some of its specialities are sports wear, linen, tablecloths and there’s household goods, too. The market is held in and around G. Mustafa Muglali Caddesi and is open Thursdays 08:00-18:00 and the best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon.
